 Biography for Larry G. Chatterton

Larry Chatterton has been employed with the Utah State Department of Corrections, Division of Adult Probation and Parole for the past 30 years. He has worked as an agent in intake, probation, parole, intensive supervision and as a supervisor for 11 years. In November of 1998 he was appointed Regional Administrator over Region One of Adult Probation and Parole, which now covers 7 counties in northern Utah.

Larry received his Bachelors degree in Criminal Justice and Social Work from Weber State University, and a Masters degree in Educational Psychology from the University of Utah. He is an adjunct professor in Criminal Justice at Weber State University.

He is in charge of the LSI implementation project for the Utah Department of Corrections and is a Master Trainer on the LSI and the LS/CMI risk assessment instruments.

He has presented workshops on risk assessment and Motivational Interviewing at various state and national conferences. These include the American Probation and Parole Association training institutes, the University of Utah School on Alcoholism and other Drugs, the Utah Annual Substance Abuse Conference, the Utah Sheriff’s Association Annual Conference and the 2nd Annual Workforce Pipeline Reentry Summit in Madison, Wisconsin where he was the keynote speaker.

He is also the coordinator and lead trainer for Motivational Interviewing implementation and training with the Utah Department of Corrections. He is a member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT). MINT includes members from all over the world who provide MI training, coaching, and consultation. To encourage good practice standards, MINT membership is limited to trainers who have completed a training workshop for new MI trainers that is sponsored by MINT. He has also attended an advanced MI workshop taught by the founder of MI, Dr. William Miller, and a colleague of Dr. Miller’s, Dr. Theresa Moyer, who conducts research on MI and develops coding instruments. He is a trained coder for Motivational Interviewing on the MITI 3.1.

Larry teaches MI and risk assessment workshops for his agency and on a private basis to agencies around the country. He serves as a member of the First Judicial District Victims’ Rights committee and as a board member for the Bridgerland Training Association.
